Where to start?

Hello folks :),

I want to start learning Java. I want to make Java Applets, not pages (not jsp). I have programming experience, I'm pretty good at PHP, Javascript, I know relatively well C/C++, and some markup/design based languages like HTML and CSS. I also know some OOP which I heard is essential in Java.

What I don't know is where to start. What tools do I need to write Java code and compile it? I heard about Eclipse (which sounds a bit like a wysiwyg editor), about JCreator, etc. I don't know how to compile Java code (I heard it is semi-compiled, because it doesn't actually create a binary file) and I don't know how to code in Java. Any good Java tutorials on both coding and installation?

You should give Eclipse a try. It has the compiler built in as well as a few tutorials. It would definitely be a good place to start. After that you can find more tutorials at java.sun.com
