'Ello,
I'm a student in my final year at the Southampton Solent University and for my dissertation (this is the main final project we do at the end of University in the UK) I'm trying to make an online coding environment for website development that supports XHTML & CSS syntax highlighting and other features.
If you have some spare time could you post what application(s) you currently use for coding websites in or what WYSIWYG editor(s) you use, what operating system(s) you develop on and why you use it.
A list the three main features you think any web development coding environment should have, the three best features the coding environment you use has and three things you wish it did have would also be very helpful.
If you have enough time (or just have nothing better to do) for those that have used or do use Dreamweaver could you tell me what your opinions are of Dreamweaver? Just what you think the Pros & Cons are of it.
I'm not looking for long answers to this (although if you have enough time for it, it would help) just short two or three line answers will be fine stating what you use and why then a short list of what you think web development coding environments should have, best parts of the one you use and what you wish yours had.
Thank you for read this and your time in advance, El Barto.

I use eclipse. It can do whatever I need it to do.

I use Crimson Editor. Free, but in no way does it seem that way. It is NOT a WYSIWIG, but it has a view in browser option which will open your file in the browser. You can program macros, and with the save and load features you have limitless actions at your fingertips. Color coding also is good. As far as what I would want it to have...nothing, lol. I can't think of anything better for the uses I have of it.

I use HTML-Kit. The three main features for why I use it: Syntax highlighting (HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL) Built-in FTP interface Highly configurable with lots of available plug-ins
(The other main reason is the cost: free. :) )
One thing it is missing, though, is support for syntax highlighting of some version 5 PHP keywords; thus I am considering moving to something else, but so far inertia and the fact that I'm comfortable with HTML-Kit have kept me from switching.

"editplus2". Easier to learn than html-kit (imho), fast, lite. My workhorse. Not as many features probably as html-kit, which I tried for a week or two but never got familiar with it.
I keep several pre-made templates stored in editplus2 so when it's page-build time, I start with a clean, working template and begin populating it with client's content.
Caveat: based on Trident rendering engine, you view as IE does. You can launch other browser/s via editplus2 to view your work, but it is an external process essentially.
I'd like it more if editplus2 were to render creations with the gecko engine instead (e.g. -Mozilla, Fx, etc) but then again, -you'd still have to 'check your work in a version of IE' at some point...

Crimson Editor by choice, Microsoft Visual Web Designer by necessity (schoolwork, you know.)

For visual design its hard to beat Dreamweaver...for coding I use eclipse. I have developed an in-house application framework running mod_perl, apache on debian linux and mysql for database needs. it is a secure and stable environment for running of the website, which is essential in the end product..using object orientated mod_perl makes for rapid prototyping and development on even large scale projects..

I use Dreamweaver on OSX, and I love it.
I think the syntax highlighting is great, so are all the link fixing, auto linking, autocompletion, all these save time.
Auto upload on save is great, so is synchronisation.
I really like how it uses "live pages" or whatever they are to contact your server and use a display, for example, a php page without uploading it.
I can't really think of any cons... except... no, none.

I've been bouncing between several programs, however, lately I've used Notepad++. It has Syntax Highlighting in abundance for a lot of different things, including for PHP, CSS and javascript I think (I'll have to check).
Before that, I was marginally HTML-Kit.

I use vi and geany on FreeBSD with Firefox. Graphics editing with The Gimp. I have no need for anything else.
I use vi/vim because it's the best editor in the world, besides emacs. I can do anything from the keyboard without touching the mouse. Some of the things I do are easier using geany which has a tabbed interface but I really don't need it.
I use FreeBSD because it's the same as my servers and Unix derived. A sound foundation that's been around forever (and free) with a knowledgeable support community. The power to serve.
Firefox because it's a modern, standards compliant browser with excellent tools for viewing and debugging all my pages and code.

dreamweaver CS3
i like it because of organization. auto margins after carriage return, highlighting syntax. it was expensive for just those :P, otherwise before that I just used notepad.
XP Pro and OSX for OSes
test in firefox, then safari, then IE7 and 6
I guess I also like dreamweaver for the FTP and secure FTP.

I am a member of the South Harmen Institute of Technology. Yes our acronym is **** we get that alot. And we use HTML Kit here mostly because its free and because it can do alot more than dreamweaver when you add all the plugins you want.
