I have seen in some forums that if a topic did not receive a reply, the original poster will "bump" it by posting a basically empty reply, making it NEW again.

I thought about doing that to a couple of my posts, but I don't know if it might be considered rude and/or spam-like.

What do you think?

i think that if it's a few days and no one replies, and your post is far from the top (really far from the top, where no one's going to see it anymore) it should be okay so post an "anyone?" reply to bring attention back to your thread.

but i don't know - maybe i'm wrong and maybe that is bad etiquette. i think that in some cases it's okay.

in many cases, people ask for others to write their code for them, without any effort on their part. usually, no one is going to reply, and this person is foolish for thinking he's gonna get help. others post completely stupid questions (sorry, i know there's no such thing as a stupid or wrong question) but i've read some terribly ridiculous threads that i skipped right over.

Nah, it's not a problem to "bump" your post if it's been a day or two. We get a lot of posts here and it's hard to keep track of them all. You might also look at why the post is not being answered if their are a lot of views. Maybe it is hard to understand or needs a link to the code, or the code posted.

What you don't want to do is either bump it after 30 minutes because you need the answer NOW or bump it when you ask someone to write your code for you (as dtm32236 stated), which you should be doing anyway.

Thanks to both of you, now BUMP, BUMP. I am headed to the PHP Forum to bump a couple of cURL questions.

'bump'-ing is good. I personally almost never read beyond page #1 of any forum... A post that is on pg.2 or later, I almost never see unless I previously responded or comitted, and had to do some offline-building or testing and a daylater, post-up some results.
Sometimes my plate is that full. :D

The only time we have a problem is when someone starts doing it within a couple hours of posting. That kind of thing is like nagging. Most forms don't respond well to that. But we would rather you bump a thread than create a new one
