web service with java

hello i am trying to build a web service with java for my final school project .But i am having a very difficult time about finding documents . Every document about it very confusing and advanced . I need a step by step tutorial , or a simple hello world webservice . If anyone can help me i would appriciate it ..

are you limited in the type of technology you can use? can it be hosted on tomcat? jboss? integrate with xfire? axis?

I was limited but it got too confusing , then i talked to my teacher and decided to use tomcat and axis..
