I dont want to save it to PNG else you know what happens (big annoying gray box in IE) and gif just destroys it. I suppose I could export the image without the drop shadow, but I'd have to have a way of reimplementing the drop shadow somewhere else. Additionally, the image will be laying over a gradient.

Not sure exactly what you want, but in Fireworks, you can simply select an image, and apply a drop shadow and then the image to the canvas and you're done.

Might find your solution some where in this Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?q=photoshop%3A+drop+shadow+for+image+text&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a).

Give me or someone else with a copy of photoshop the image and we can save it as a .gif file with the same quality as a .png image.
