They're called entities and you can create your own, but support is less than spotty. Your best bet is to use XHTML and an XSL preprocessor.

To take it one step further you could pick up a server side language (or put it on your 'to do' list) thats when you can get into the data bases and the storeing of logins and the query strings passing data all over the place... its fun :)
