Ok den, my last post went somewhere, and I havn't a cluewhere lol but newayz, I was thinking how about making like a supersite for all of us 16 and under. I can sort out hosting, can buy a domain if needed and fund the thing (i get money in from my hosting site so that'll cover costs).
I just need a team of like 5 people who really want to help, and some ideas of what we want there. Anyone at all intrested?
Havn't got anything done yet, I thought we should make this some big team effort, and all put in ideas for everything from names, to design to content. Server supports PHP, Perl, SSI as wel as other languages that can be set-up if needed, though I think PHP will do us fine.
Just post a reply if your intrested, and I'll try and build up a team. When I have a few people, I'll set up a password protected forum for staff to post on, and a staff area so we can work on this thing.
All details will be sent to you via e-mail and PM.
Ummmm, ask anything if you want, I just seen a few sites pop-up now and again, but normally they just go straight back into the pit again, so I thought we should give it go, and perhaps prove to some doubting adults that we can be just as good as them, if not better!

What exactly would it be about? Kid web designers? Sounds kind of interesting-I might be able to put in a bit of time.
But I think doing this to prove something to adults is a vain (sp?) purpose. For the most part, my clients (usually for general computer work) are are only delighted that I have learned what I know at the age of 13. And adult web devs I have talked to are delighted that kids are interested in it, and they are only glad to help me along the way.

there are already webhosting programs geared toward teens and made by teans it would not be original but good luck to you. Right now I am trying to get a sstand alone box to run as an frp and my friend is running our forum and shout cast off his server. I am working at a soon to no longer be a pirate radio station (we are getting an fcc amateur radio license) and all of my efforts are in that, I am also working on a new website now for this station.

I get many mixed opions on what I do, I have even had adults thrating me for undercutting them o their prices and still offering the same services.
Don't really mind what the sites about, thats what we have to work out yet, ummmm I'm kind of in a good postion at the moment, which is why I guess I'm going to invest in this with some of the money I've stored up. More about me anywayz at http://www.gavinpearce.co.uk, a page normally just given to friends and one off jobs, normally front porjects with Gavin Networks Inc. http://www.gavnet.com
Cheers for the thumbs up PeOfEo!

Also thinking of creating it so there are different ranks in the staff, people who know a fair bit with full access fiel FTP and everything, while people who kow little, we will build up a very simple webadmin area for them to post stuff to.

Sounds like a great idea to me-but I think you/me/whoever wants to work on it needs to decide what it would be about :D
Young Web Developers?
Before I design a site, I like to plan.
1). What is it about?
2). What does it provide that no one else provides
3). Who is the target audience.
Stuff like that.
<offtopic>
I was checking out your website, and I saw this graphic
http://www.gavnet.com/images/main_pic.jpg
Pictures like this seem to be popular with web design/technology sites. Did you create it yourself? If so, any tips on how to take photos like that, and what tools you used to edit them.

being 17 I can't help you but how about showing what under 16's have achieved - a sort of exhibition of 16 or unders work? So long as you find some nice sites. Guess some youngsters are good in Flash, so you could have a flash movies section as well, maybe graphics section. Just a few ideas lol.
Then you can write your own simple introductions to web design, aimed at kids. And don't forget to link to www.webdevfaqs.com !

just cause your 17, doesn't mean we don't need the help. Feel free to tag along a bit if you want, just was trying to keep it 16 andunder, cause its an age people tend to regard as getting more adult.
I kind of like Daves idea, perhaps we could do a few things though, have a fair bit of content, and offer our sertvices as well.
Nearly like a portal, but offering services for fees, with forums for kids, and that kind of thing. Chat rooms etc..
Other kids can just sign up and post news to the homepage, that kind of thing.

well if you need any help with your css...
LOL
what 'look' are you going for?
corporate: because you're appealing to mature kids (is there such a thing? Do they become young adults by then? lol)
bright: yellows and blues and things - stereotypical kids site lol. like this http://crayola.com/ j/k
somewhere in between.
GavinPearce
09-06-2003, 03:17 PM
crayola.com indeed :p
colours is something else to decide, still need a few more staff first. Jona you wanna help, coluod do with your skills :p
Well, I would be willing to help out. I'm 16. I'm not the best with coding yet but have had much experiance with web site design and layout. I have done stuff with graphics to. I'm just now getting into flash. Let me know if you decide to recrute me. Thanks. :)

I want in on this. I LOVE flash and have MX on my computer + I can get all the other ones like coldfusion if you want me to. Alrdy have a lot of things done and Im way good at flash. just haven't gotten into the deeper scripting that is used in MX but im good at the basic animation.
Im 14 btw. Gotta computer software programmer(high-end, not a cubical kid) for a step-dad so I can get help from him if we ever need it.
Also: I don't think yellow should be used on our page unless its text used in front of a blue-ish background. I can provide High Quality backgrounds if you need. And I think we should have some blackish backgrounds/dark colors because they tend to be easier on the eye(unless you use pink or dark colored text over them).
Another note: I think we could put some tips on where to find EVERYTHING to help kids trying to learn about this kinda stuff. Like I know I spent 2 years just trying to get active in this kinda stuff and wasnt until I found these forums that I was getting anywhere. Now I know tons of stuff.(I know you adults are asking, "why didn't you ask your step-dad?" Well he was always busy and we weren't really that close but now we are so its way more interesting/helpful.
Content: We should have a chatbox, but it should have the ability to create new rooms so that it can be used when two people are online and want to talk faster as apposed to on a forum. Otherwise, use the forums.
Hope I can be a great addition to the team(if i'm accepted).
Sux0rZh@jc0rz
09-06-2003, 10:27 PM
Also: I doubt the chatbox will be used constantly because I don't think we will have huge amounts of visitors as to generate a crowd big enough for a chatbox. But it would be good to use for meetings and such(of the developers)

Not too big of a deal to install a chatroom with user-created rooms. Both phpOpenChat and phpMyChat support this-that shouldn't take half an hour to set one up.
Well I have a chat script which I created with great help from Jona and I think it would suffice. If you would like to see a demo you can go to my chat room on my site here:
http://www.thedandygroup.com/chat/
It's not real-time and you have to hit the refresh button to see new posts but it's way easier and faster than a forum. It works without any databases and is php based. Right now it has some functions that work in javascript but I have been looking for help to make it all php so all you would need to use it is php and html. If I were to get some php expertise for this script then I think together we could make it work for this site. :)
Sux0rZh@jc0rz
09-06-2003, 11:43 PM
Not to insult your chatbox but it really does need an automatic refresh button... Also: could you change it so that it says:
Sux0rzh@jc0rz says, "asdlfkajslkfdjb;lah"
Visitor says, "blah blah blah"
Bob says,"blah blah blah"
instead of the big boxes and lines you got going on... and if that removes smilies then ohwell cause you can just do =/ and =P and =p and :*( and such. I am not a fan of smilies cause they are ugly.;)
Well those sound like some really good ideas but I don't really wanna go to all the trouble until I know if everybody even wants it and if everybody likes those ideas also. So I think I will leave it as-is until I get some more thoughts about it! Thanks for your ideas though. :D

Look instead of a refresh button just use
<Meta http-equiv="refresh" content="2 'time in seconds';url="theurl"> Put that in the page that is refreshing, the page the querys the data base. Or better yet use an applet.
I have tried the refresh thing and it is very annoying to have it reload the page all the time so would someone be interested in helping me build an applet that would refresh only when a new message is posted if thats possible?
PeOfEo
09-07-2003, 12:35 AM
the idea of an applet is so that the new data would be displayed with nothing having to refresh.
Ohh ok I get it now. So do you have the resources and the time and the willingness to do it for the sake of the site were all gonna build?
Sux0rZh@jc0rz
09-07-2003, 12:40 AM
not sure about PHP but in other things you make the area where the text is displayed a different frame from everything else and then do the fresh on the frame. that way only the textarea where people are posting refreshes. not the entire page.
PeOfEo
09-07-2003, 12:41 AM
Well I am learning java right now but I dont know a thing about how to make applets. Its on my 'to learn' list but they dont teach it in class so I will need to buy a book sometime... so sorry. But there are some java nerds around here that can probably help you out. They make premade applets too you know just do a google search for applets.
I was thinking to just replace the current Iframe thats there with an applet and then the form on the main frame would submit to it. So it would not be a full blown chat toatally made in java but the only thing that would be java is the part where the messages are displayed!
PeOfEo
09-07-2003, 12:45 AM
Well I would have to know java to do that, But like I said they have premade applets that do just that, just do a search for them.

Yea, we would love another team member, at the moment there is only three of us, the old project was pulled, and then started again, and then stolen :p don't worry long story.
Anyway KidScript has a few layouts, and work is just going on with coding it. We decided to use a premade forum, phpbb being our choice because of its ease of modification, and a lot of major mods will go into that.
Basically we are aiming to have tutorials, documents, downloads, helpful links, the two main sections are hopefully going to be the documents/tutorials and the forum.
Can I ask if you use msn?
I'd love to speak more about it on there.
Add me - javagavin@hotmail.com
If not just send me an e-mail to:
kidscript-frmwebdev@gavinpearce.co.uk
I'll get it.
Thanks for your offer. Speak soon.
