I think pretty much every good site like this around these days have ads. It's because they need the ad revenue to keep the site going. It's not free to provide a service like this. It costs lots of money. Also, this site doesn't sell products or anything like that so the ad revenue is the only thing keeping it alive. I think you'll find that true for most decent sites like this one. One of the only alternatives would be to charge some sort of "premium membership" fee. Then they could remove the ads because you'd be paying for it out of your own pocket. I don't know about you but I prefer the ads over that idea any day. Besides, I don't think the ads are that bad. I've seen plenty of sites with much worse. Ads are a time-tested method for generating revenue without directly charging the visitors. If you can come up with a better way to generate revenue while still keeping it basically free for the end-user, then by all means, speak up.

BTW, I came back here after a very long while, and my first greeting was "please type your message in the textbox and let me say it".
I ignored it, logged in, and here she goes again, louder and much more agressively : "Please type your message in the textbox and LET ME SAY IT !!!"
Maybe that's only an impression...

For what I can say, adds or not adds, this is the best developer website I know. Never found anything better.

moving ads are designed to distract you from what you are reading, they $^ck,

do more ads, colorfull even, but not moving ads, give me a break, trying to focus on complicated code, while an ad is moving and blinking is rediculous,

Remember the fuzz about this ad, about two years ago ? Was it the macromedia guy, or something similar ? That was really funny :)

I don't really care about the ads, but when you are at work and this stupid girl goes "LET ME SAY IT!!!" just when the boss enters the room, or when it's the middle of the night, you just finished watching an horror movie, and you decide to visit WD and you are welcomed by miss "Type your message in the textbox", it can be quite a shock :)

Ads still load, JupiterMedia gets paid, but Flash objects don't actually do anything unless I click on them. :)
