Fade in help

I'm sorry, this is probably so simple, but I'm just getting started writing html. I do have a website and I want more control over it.
I'm trying to get the name of my band to fade in slowly, on my index page, then stay there - ( more advanced, my vision is for the text to fluctuate in intesity after it fades in.)
can anyone help?

OR you can do it with an animated GIF.
