I have recently installed Microsoft personal Web Server on my PC as I want to start developing with ASP. My PC is not networked (apart from Dial-up Networking) and is a Pentium II 600Mhz with 128Mb ram and plenty of disk space. The problem I have is the PWS is extremely slow and unusable. Even opening the publishing wizard takes two to three minutes to go between each step of the wizard. Trying to open a published web sites is even worse, it virtually grinds to a halt - 10-15 mins later if I’m lucky something may appear in the browser!! Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? I also have FrontPage 2000 and Visual Studio V6 installed and I am using IE V6.

Thanks Dave,
I have installed the win 98 version and while I have been trying to solve my problem I have seen the NT version on the Microsoft web. I'll try to download and install the NT version and I'll let you know the result.

Sean.

Hi Dave,
I downloaded PWS from Microsoft at the following URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/nt4optpk/default.asp
The NT versions would not install, they recognised my machine is not running NT and aborted the install. However, I downloaded the Windows 95 version and when you run the install it say's it is an NT 4.0 service pack! Therefore, I completed the installation but still have the same problem. I even tried uninstalling FrontPage, installing the PWS then re-installing FrontPage. Still no joy! Everything installs OK but runs incredibly slow (unusable).
Any other suggestions will be appreciated but it looks like I will have to use a hosted service for developing my ASP’s
Regards
Sean.

Hi Dave,
While lying in bed last night unable to sleep because of this PWS problem I had a moment of inspiration!
EUREKA! Problem solved… Solution: I turned off my Personal Firewall.
I haven’t had any of there errors you have experienced however, if you are going to remove and reinstall and you are using Win 98 SE I have discovered the best procedure is to copy the contents of the \add-ons\pws\ directory on the Windows 98 SE installation CD to a temporary directory on your H/Drive. Replace the file named Mtssetup.dll with a new one from the Microsoft support site at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246081
Then run setup.exe from your temporary directory. Now install FrontPage. Once you have installed FrontPage, run the Microsoft Office tools “Server extensions administrator” Right click on your server directory and then select ‘Task’ and Update the Extensions. If it say’s ‘Check server extensions’ they are already updated. Also try running "\Program Files\Microsoft FrontPage\FrontPage Server Administrator.lnk" to check the installed extensions. This may or may not run depending on whether FrontPage was installed before or after PWS.
Good Luck
Sean.
