...embarassingly simple, most likely..

I made some changes to my XP system that I cannot seen to revert back from. The folders on my desktop have a dark block of color beneith them (see Screenshot image), and I can't seem to get rid of this. I want it transparent, like it was before.
I don't work with XP much, but have done this before. I'm just too tired to see what I am missing. Explainify this for me. :o

I believe the setting you're looking for is:
System Properties > Advanced > Performance > Visual Effects > Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop

I have tried that, no, this is for making the icons/text have a very slight 3D effect. At any rate, either setting for that ("checked" or "un-checked"), no difference is noted..

I recently lost my 'sound' device, -no audio. A missing, corrupt or damaged C-MEDIA AC97 whatever... Attempting to play video or audio tracks gets the message "no mixer device found" and something about "just in time debugger" and "Visual Studio"... okay, -lost me there!

*I* suspect that I took a software upgrade and my soundcard is not not compatible. I intend to get a better sound card anyway (this is bare-bones for clicks & whistles, barely audible. The one I used to have prior to motherboard replacement, was like a 4-speaker stereo and VERY nice, but not compatible with this system I guess..).

I am reluctant to get a new soundcard and have it NOT play sounds, if that is not the problem. Problem being, un-reversible upgrading that nullified some hardware and altered some software, notably being, -my desktop icons which software said 'this setting uses less RAM' so I took it, now, cannot get back what I lost..
There were other (several!) changes that occured, -all of which of the ones I decided that do not like, I reverted manually... except for that destop icon visual thing which defies reversion.

Hmm... That's very odd...

Well, I just did a Google search and got this (http://www.google.com/search?q=windows%2Bxp%2Bdesktop%2Bicon%2Blabel%2Bbackground). Maybe try something from those results... I looked at a few of the first results but I'm not sure what will work for you. Unless of course you've already tried Google. Other than that, I'm not really sure. I've never experienced this problem before.

Good luck. I hope you figure it out. :)

Really though, glad you got it figured out. ;)
