Hi Folks,

I 'm a web developer who has just finished work on a large website which has just been launched. However, I currently work alongside a liason person who has been liasing with the marketing department and the web team to supply content to the website.

Due to this the whole process of designing the website has become very political and almost always ends in arguments.

I'm also finding this person is starting to take the credit for all of the work our department is doing.

Has anyone else ever been in a similar situation?

Any advice would be much appreciated

I would suggest finding his computer and pissing around it so he wont go around it. Then when the work still gets done people will wonder who did it. And you will come out victoriously.

Next time a big project comes up you should suggest that the liaison person be the one to do the development since they obviously did such a good job on the current project.

I agree with Felgall..... nothing is better than putting someone on the spot after they take credit for something they really didn't do. But in all honesty, unless the person whose taking credit for it is getting a raise out of it, is it really worth it? Aren't you both on the same side in all reality?

On HIS computer when nobody is watching, do this:

1) Hide ALL the current desktop icons.
2) Create an empty folder and call it "PORNOGRAPHY" or something like that. Position it around the center of the screen (prominantly so). It will be the ONLY visible image on the screen,
3) Take a screenshot image of the desktop, and save it. Go back to the desktop and delete the 'fake' folder, and then:
4) Change the current desktop image to the 'fake one' you just created...
5) Make the 'hidden' desktop icons, visible again.

Everything will look as it did before... except the 'fake folder' in the new background image will 'appear to be a new folder', -but un-clickable, un-draggable, un-deletable... Let's see how quickly he can figure this one out...

My favorite response to this type of posturing is to send the person's boss, cc-ing the individual and your boss, a email or memo thanking them for letting the individual "contribute" to your development effort and detailing their involvement. If you do it right, the individual can't protest too loudly because he's being commended, but his and your boss will undoubtedly note the discrepancies.

I ran into this years ago at Intel. My solution: (other than the great idea of sending an email to all parties involved)... create a footer at the bottom of the application and put your name, email and phone # right in the app! No getting around who designed that! ;)
