How to know if a url is down with javascript

I'm working in a page where I want to controlate if a url is down with javascript. This url is the url that serve the
advertorials and we want to continue serving our page
if the advertorial is down.

It's a good idea but the problem is that I don't controlate the server so I don't know where I can find an image.
