Why are manholes round?

Note: This is a famous Microsoft question. Yet amusingly, the Microsoft campus uses square manholes.

And, why is Microsoft using square ones ?

Why are manholes round?

So that they cannot fall through the manhole regardless of what position or angle they are in.

And, why is Microsoft using square ones ?
Because they want to create their own proprietary manhole standard rather than following the standard that the rest of the world follows (and that Microsoft initially said they would follow).

Structerally, a round manhole is stronger than a square manhole in both lateral compressive and twisting-torque, so leave it to M$ to bone-da-pooch with a sub-standard structure. Way to go, Bill.
