Bitmap Format

Hey Everybody,
I'm thinking about trying to make my own "Type the letters shown in this picture" script, one of those anti-spambot doohickeys. Does anybody know how .bmp's are encoded? I've seen one or two articles online, but i've been unable to successfully open a bmp in a texteditor yet. Any suggestions?

BMP is an image extension and will not and can not be opened in a text editor. Not and see the image as it should be seen. Try using Windows Paint program. BMP file format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMP_file_format)

I would use the CAPTCHA programs available. This site allows some choices: http://www.protectwebform.com/
