Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum so please bare with me.
I created a web site using FP 2000 and Frames. It is working fine on my ISP's UNIX server but I can't get the searchable sites (hotbot, yahoo altavista etc.) to recognise it. I did the following as indicated in the help section but to no avail. Any Ideas?
From FP 2000 heip menu
"Flag a page for a search engine
You can index keywords to your home page to make your web more accessible to search engines such as Yahoo! or Alta Vista.
On the File menu, click Properties, and then click the Custom tab.
Under User Variables, click Add.
In the Name box, type keywords.
In the Value box, type the index keywords for your site, using commas to separate words.
Click OK to close the User Meta Variable dialog box, and then click OK to close the Page Properties dialog box."
Thanks, Don

Well, actually, there is no way to get a search engine to index your site. They have to find it on there own. Some search engines have a feature where you can submit your site, but sometimes they charge.:)

Now if you want to get listed on Directory MoZilla DMOZ http://dmoz.org/ typically you have to get approved by a DMOZ Editor like myself.
If you are approved your site can be added to the directory within a day or so since it is edited by humans... Although DMOZ has strict rules.

Robert, Thanks for the info.
I just applied. It was a pretty straight forward and painless process.

The web spiders really have a hard time with frames. For my site - ironcitadel.com - I avoided using frames for that reason.
Also, they can't handle dynamically generated pages.
My recommendation - provide a few nonframed static pages in your site - index.htm, privacy_policy.htm, etc.
Also, create a hallway.htm file that just contains links to those static pages only.
Don't forget to create a robots.txt file that lists the directories and files you DON'T want the web spiders to waste their time with.
Hope this helps!

I have tried on no less than 10 different occasions to get listed in dmoz but the page times out! This is with IE5.5, 6, Mozilla 1.2a and Opera 6.05 so it's not a browser issue, any ideas?

The servers at DMOZ do go down a lot and as I mentioned the criteria for getting listed can be very strict.
I only run a small sub section (http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/United_Kingdom/Society_and_Culture/Teen_and_Youth/Organisations/Young_Farmers_Clubs/ ), not really related to webmastering.
If you want to check the current online server status: http://www.teledanmark.dk/werner_status/
Personally I think you'll have a hard time getting listed in the Webmaster sections because they probably have extra stringent criteria for those sections and 'commercial orientated sites' will have an uphill struggle.
If I were you I'd contact the relevant DMOZ editor and ask for an explanation of why you were unsuccessful at getting your sites listed during the review possess, alternatively you could visit the DMOZ Public Forum: http://www.resource-zone.com/

It's not so much the not getting listed it's the instability of the submission itself.
Thanks for the insight into the commercial aspect.
