My external HD -- 600GB Lacie D2 Big Disk Extreme stopped working properly after about 3-4 months of work. I couldn't access the drive, and my PC would recognize it as a device that needed to be formated.

Tech support was more interested in trying to explain me that they have no responsibility, and they can help me-out with reformatting it though. Well, I don't care about reformatting it since that means I'll lose everything that's written in it.

I looked on Google for Data Recovery companies and there are plenty of them. Some companies don't charge anything if the data is not recovered, but in expense of that, if they do recover the data, their fee is higher. While, the companies that do charge you initial fee, charge you less if they do recover the data (I think I'll go with those).

The thing is that I would be able to figure-out if the drive still contains any of the data if only my PC would be able to display the drive and mount it on My Computer, so I can see how much space is used. But the PC just doesn't recognize it, unless it is reformatted. I also tried on a MAC, and it is the same thing: It asks to be formated.

Any suggestions?
