Morning everyone my name is Steve and this is my first post on webdeveloper.com! It's unfortunate that my first post has to be of the negative nature. Anyways here is the issue and i would like some feedback as to what you would do in my shoes.

The company I work for has asked me to remove my personal links from my e-mail signature. "That fine I can live with that." Second they also asked that i remove any mention of their site from my web portfolio and this makes me steaming upset!

Here are a few quick facts:

I have single handedly re-designed their entire site and over 20 applications in less 6 months and ported them from flash to PHP per their request.
I have built them a personal Intranet with an incredible array of functionality in the company

So on my portfolio I obviously go into great detail of my work and accomplishments at this company. I feel like they are trying to make it harder for me to leave? Any Idea's Comment's Suggestion's???

Also i hope i posted this in the right section as i felt that it was the most appropriate section to post it in...

I can appreciate your frustration, but I suspect you signed an employment contract when you were hired, and typically those contracts will state things to the effect of "anything you do while working here is ours, not yours." So it follows they're protecting their IP rights by making the point that *they* own the web site, not you. Yes, it's an annoying "corporate" thing...

Start working on a portfolio of your own, outside the company's ownership. That's the only solution I can think of.

By the way, those 's's are killing me!

Dave Thanks for the reply! My portfoilio is something I have developed outside of work and is not hosted on a company IP. I understand the idea of corperate ownership but is it so bad to claim that you developed and designed software for a company. You can view my portfolio here (http://www.andekian.com/) if you would like to take a gander at what it's like. I already removed the work from the company I am currently working for.

I think what he was getting at is that the company doesn't want the work they paid you under there employment to show up under your freelancing online portfolio.

Now on the flip side of that... I would keep it in your print portfolio/resume.

Whatever the details of how your online portfolio came together you should respect the wishes of those you answer too at work. I'm glad to see you mentioned that you took the high road and removed it already.

BTW - Welcome to the site!

Only downside is if anyone asks the said company for references they may deny all knowledge of you - depends on what the management of the company is like. Some companies do want to keep you, and when you go may try to hinder your personal development.

I'd be looking for other work and leave this company in the past - you're certainly good enough not to have to rely on this one company.

I agree that you should respect the wishes of this company whether you were employed by them or working freelance. No point in potentially aggravating them.
