Here's the story. I worked for an ad agency and was laid off. I asked a fellow former employee (who still works there) if he'd be interested in building a site for me. I offered to pay him and wanted to pay. He declined and said it wasn't a big deal.

My business has been getting off the ground rather well and people are asking for my site. I am a photographer, so I wanted samples/prices etc. on it.

Well, it took 2 months to get ANYTHiNG. I e-mail and call him about once a week about it. Lately it's been more. He is now not answering my calls or e-mails.

For the past month I have asked for access into the site so I can change things myself. There are several problems with the site, and I am completely capable of handling them. I asked him to design it because he is a programmer and I didn't have the neccesary software at the time.

Anyway. I am freaking fed up with this. The site is hosted by my former employer for free. I do not care. I will pay for hosting. I know an ok amount of design, but little else. Can someone please explain to me how to move my site off their server, onto my own host?

I own the domain name too. I needed this done going on 3 months ago. Help is greatly appreciated.

sja,
Do you have source for your site ?
If not there are other ways to grab pages from present site from another site.

I suggest you simply purchase hosting from another company. Since you are the domain name owner (as you wrote), the person or company that currently hosts the site is obliged to release the DNS pointers for that domain name. Most hosting providers offer the service to help you moving your domain name.

If the current hosting provider declines to take the necessary steps to move the domain or isn't answering phone / email, you might consider taking legal actions, although -since it's a former collegue - that of course isn't the friendly way.

I did extract all the pages and images.

So, if I purchase hosting with another site, they can intruct me on moving the DNS?
