I have tons of vhs tapes at home, and I was thnking about setting up a website similar to NetFix. However, my mom told me that it isn't legal to sell movies. Do I need to buy some sort of special license to legally sell videos or do I need to strike a deal with the publishing company?
I'm not aware of any law that says you can't sell movies that you've purchased. It is, however, illegal to make copies of the movies for sale (or to sell illegally made copies that you purchased). Don't take this as legal advice, just as my opinion based on working in an audiovisual library for several years.
FYI -- I don't know of many people who buy vhs tapes any more. Whenever I go to flea markets or such, there are always tons of them for sale. You might make more money by recycling them through one of the charitable organizations, which will give you an estimated value for a tax write-off. When I worked in the library, that's what we did. Most of our patrons didn't want to purchase them when given the opportunity.

You should be able to sell them legally, you just can't rent them without a permit from the publishing company, But I agree with KDLA:You might make more money by recycling them through one of the charitable organizations, which will give you an estimated value for a tax write-off.

Some movies are restricted as to which countries they can be sold in so be sure to check that before listing it for sale so as to indicate any restrictions on where the buyer is allowed to be.
