I'm looking for some tips or suggestions for adding audio to a web page and the best way to control it. Most of the online references I've found are dated in the late 90s and I'm assuming there have been some developments since.
Through Macromedia related sites, the recommendation seems to be to use Flash but I'd like some unbiased opinions.
Any online references or books would be great. Also any recommendations for recording software.
Thanks!

Since the advent of the browser wars and AOL's purchase of Netscape, the API for javascript communication with plug-ins has changed radically in the Netscape/Mozilla browsers. What was fairly easy to do using LiveAudio is no longer supported, and no one has bothered to update things, at least as far as I have been able to determine. There are no DOM JS standard methods for communicating with a plug-in. The Sun/Micro$oft Java war also contributed to this problem.
Micro$oft used to make a multimedia plug-in for Netscape 4.7 that was compatible with MediaPlayer 6.4, but they have discontinued Netscape support on newer MP versions.
That pretty much leaves you with coding for IE alone and leaving people with other browsers to use the standard controls.
The W3C doesn't seem to be too interested in it, since there are no standard methods for controlling multimedia. So much for standards...

Streaming media works with netscape browsers (i think). Try creating it so that you can use streaming media.

The streaming idea is pretty good and flash is also a good standard to use.
I'm not sure what you mean by the best way to control the audio...do you mean for the user, or for you to control it?
As far as recomendations for recording software...that depends totally on WHAT you are recording. Many people just want a good source to record sound clips. in which case Sound forge (or its budget cousin "sound forge xp") works well....but if you are in a band, or a solo artist looking to record music, Magix Music Studio 2004 can not be beaten for the price.
