We are planning a redesign of our web site and I recently signed up here and asked about getting rid of tables. I posted the name of our web site. This morning I was forwarded this email.

Hello,

I learned that your new webmaster, or the person that is
taking over the maintenance of your website, is planning to
thoroughly restructure your website (from so-called tables
layout to divs layout).

Unless you want a new design, I would strongly advise
against that. It serves no purpose that cannot be achieved
otherwise, and will cost a lot of money.

Mail me if you need more info.

I think it's a little funny actually. Its like 'hey, i dunno who you are, and have nothing to do with your business, but let me try to help make some bad business decisions for you.'

Switching from tables to a CSS layout is always a good idea. It makes DOM manipulation much easier, makes code maintenance and future changes much easier, significantly increases page loading speeds (especially over slow connections, since CSS will be cached), and also boosts your SEO ranking.

I find it very odd that someone would go out of their way to email someone at your company this. If you know who the user on the forums is, you might be able to talk to a mod about it.

It could possibly be someone who simply searched for your company URL and found your post. Perhaps someone who has offered or is planning to offer their design services.

Either way, I agree that any argument to keep tables over converting to CSS had better have an awful good reason.

I'd suggest you ignore any advice you are given in pretty much any unsolicited mail you receive; especially when the advice it from an idiot.

Feel free to contact me (or any other moderators/administrators) if you feel that we might be able to help in some way. We'd obviously prefer that users are given help rather than spam.
