What would make a cd-rom with a cd in it run/spin way too fast and make it noisy when it didn't do any of these two things previously?

Are you sure it's spinning too fast? If it's making noise, it might be that the CD is slightly warped/bent and wobbling in the tray. It's also possible the tray itself is warped or the spindle is off center. Of course, this shouldn't rule out any little plastic parts attached may have cracked or broken. Check the CD for warping first.

if it's not the CD, then it sounds like it's time for a new CD-rom. they're pretty cheap now, and incredibly simple to install.

my old CD rom started spinning really really fast for no reason (it also got incredibly noisy)... but anyway, it was spinning stupidly fast, and one of my CD roms exploded inside of it. after taking it apart, it was there was nothing left but [extremely] fine flakes of CD. it was really crazy.

Thanks to all of you. The cd's are fine and there are no broken pieces of anything anywhere. The cd-rom is a Sony CRX215E5 that came in a computer in 2002 or 2003. I have read some bad reviews about this cd-rom, so maybe it is time to get a new one.... but NOT the same brand!

id go with an LG, i had mine for about 2 years now and not a problem..

i have a dvd rom drive and a DVD ram drive both LGs..

if you have money to spend on a very nice drive, id recommend a Plextor drive, ive heard nothing but good about those but again they come at a heafty price..

if you also have sata support, get a sata drive.. im starting to look into getting one..

You might try getting a lens cleaner CD and run it through your drive. If the drive's lens has gotten too dirty, it might have trouble tracking, and is therefore causing a lot of seek errors which then cause more servo motor activity and extra disk rotations trying to locate the right sectors. Even if it doesn't help, it will be a good thing to have for your new drive, as well as any other disk players you have.

I removed the cd-rom from the system, took it apart (removed the lid cover anyway) and gently blew out the inside of the case) then cleaned the lens with 70% Isopropyl Alchohol. The cd-rom reads and burns very well now.

Nice.

I wish I had thought of that before mine exploded inside my computer.

Glad it's working now...
