I created a JPG with Photoshop CS2 as seen at the following URL: http://www.ayrshireminis.com/mini/en/galleries2.php - it's the "Add A Mini" button :-)
I have been updating the site and have changed the background colour of the table that the image is in, however I have now realised that I did not make the button with a transparent background :-(
Is it possible to use CS2 to edit the JPG to make the background transparent?

Thanks very much Scragar!!! Did you convert the JPG -> GIF with Photoshop??
I have changed it now; http://www.ayrshireminis.com/mini/en/galleries2.php
Again, many thanx!

nope, GIMP(GNU Image Manipulation Program), just highlight the section using the wand, then hit the eraser and make it transparant(depending on GIMP version you may need to set a new layer as the background).

thanks scragar, i totally missed that in your post - i remember using the GIMP before. Never really got very far with it really, have been playing about with PS CS2 for a wee while now, being a developer i've not really done much with it - but getting there.....

You can do the same in PhotoShop, too by removing the bg of the jpg using a similar tool as GIMP uses and saving it as a gif. Or save jpeg as a gif file and use GIFWorks.com online tool to make a transparent background.

Thanks for the good comments.
Another point to remember is that while .gif is great for simple designs with limited colors (you only get 256), .png is a good way to go for photo images or designs with wider color ranges, like gradients. Color range is much better, has tranparent background, and file size is much smaller that .tiff.

Yeah but the thing with transparency with .png is that it's not supported by IE6

Thanks for the reminder! I've been burned a few times by that myself. And to think I still keep IE6 around just to test for stuff like that. But you see, I've been Flashing a lot lately and .pngs come in really handy, even in IE6.

I have been trying to change the background colour of the image that I have on my page at http://www.ayrshireminis.com/mini/de/galleries.php - the exact image is http://www.ayrshireminis.com/mini/images/addmini_de.jpg
I am using Photoshop CS2, I have opened the image and then highlighted the area that I want to make transparent (with the Magic Wand), then went to Help > Export Transparent Image and then went through the wizard and exported it as a GIF (for compatibility) - but the colours come out terrible - only 8bit, so nothing like what the image is originally. How can this be done in CS2?

ok, i've also tried to save it as a PNG to begin with then save that image as a GIF, but it just destroys the colour and kicks it to 8-bit :-(
I know this can be done through the GIMP, but can it be done with PS CS2?
