mask() filter question: masking at different times

is it possible for me to make a words color be different within the word? ok, thats actually not the full question...i alos mean to have the color change splitting a letter, as in half of 'a' is black and the other half is white. i was wondering maybe using the mask() filter but imunsure bout it.

You're probably best off using an image, because even if you could find some css function to do it it probably wouldn't be widely suported, so your text would be unreadable for most people!
