I recently set up the internet for my next door neighbour(paid £30 for Virgin to set it up, but they couldn't help, leaving me to do it :P) anyway, while I was setting it up I noticed that the computer was very slow (since it's a P4, and the minimum power on a P4 is 1.3Ghtz, and I have previously run computers using 800Mhtz CPU's or less and it compairs as slow it's rather scarey), and was wondering what the suggestions to try and speed it up are?

By slow I mean that IE6 (since I had to download firefox, a firewall and antivirus for her I did a bit of IE usage) took about 3 or 4 seconds to finish drawing the google home page. The computer also take in excess of a minute to shut down, and around 3 times as long to boot.

First thing I'd do is run a HiJackThis log and see what is running. Also could check to see what the physical and virtual memory usage (and capacity looks like).
