open link in new tab

is there a way to set a new tab as link target instead of _blank, and of course to specify it in such a way that applies this only to browsers that offer tabs, and opens them in a blank new window if tabs are turned off or browser doen't know tabs? (Or is it a stupid thing to desire?)
