css layout

How would I create the basic css to layout the page as attached to this post? The header image has a shadow, that goies on to the content below it, and I've been having issues getting to look right. I always have a space betwen the header image and the content of the page.

Fake it. Either make the shade the background of the top of the content or the top of the content the bottom of the shade.
