A few suggestions;

Just start talking to the people you know, letting them know you are in business.

Do yourself a favor, and work out some guidelines for pricing your work ahead of time. The answer to, "How much does it cost to do a website?" will still almost always be, "It depends on what you want." But at least you can be ready to give some general numbers.

Depending on your age & time flexibility, you might want to join a business networking or referral group, or a local Chamber of Commerce. These are a prime source of contacts for a lot of people.

Do some volunteer work for local churches, etc. You obviously won't get any cash from it directly, but it builds your portfolio, and gives you experience in the "real world."

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Yeah, but I said 'volunteer work.' You know priests don't wear those robes for free...

Hi,
not sure on posting rival web development site here but i will share this one if OK with the MOD's.

http://www.jimworld.com/apps/webmaster.forums/parent::jimworldlounge.com/

This is has some good forum's regarding "Paid help" and "SEO" maybe you can pick up some paid work ;)

I am going to assume based on your name that you are UK based, if so register yourself with The small business gateway will possible yield some work. Join the E-Commerce business club local to your area, here you will find a lot of business people who are looking for web presence under the one roof.
Take the advice given on spreading your services by work of mouth and take it from me the volunteer sector will get you started. I did 2 volunteer sites which then opened the door for a 3 year contract with my present company.
Look at other freelancers web sites get an idea of what services they offer.
look for freelancer websites to advertise your services, like this one:

hope this helps, good luck
:D

these days the lord needs all the help he can get...

and if you're starting up shop the more you have in your portfolio the more likely you will attract potential clients, besides imagine the amount of church goers that don't use the net anything else except downloading psalms, a church parish website automatically has an auidience, many of which may even be looking for the kinda guy that'd be would make his skills available to the lord to design them a site for their bisuness etc.

Go to www.eNance.com. I believe this may be the type of site you are talking about. It allows freelancers to bid for projects that are posted. It is a brand new site, but there are already 3 jobs posted. I thought you might want to take a look...

Hi,

i agree with an earlier posting that you should join up with your local business link and go on a starting in business course. By the end of it you wil know if freellance web design is for you.

Also the market is going more towards quality design. You need to be a good designer as well.
