Redirect a broken link

Is there a way to redirect a broken link to the new link. I had a .mpg video file and I shortened the filename for convenience as well as changed it to a .mov file. Is there a way to make it so that when people return to the old link (.mpg) they will automatically be redirected to the .mov file instead?

Besides a 404 error page on the server that redirects to the mpeg no and a 404 will not even work because the default browser settings will probably have the user download the video instead of having the browser handle it.
