I haven't already enabled the display of filename extensions.

I don't understand why I should do that. What's the reason?

My book says to go to "My Computer", then from the menu choose Tools >> Folder Options >> View. Then, uncheck the box marked "Hide extensions for known file types." Then, click OK.

Why do I need to do that?

If you're working in web development, and working on a project that has many different file types, it's very handy and convenient to know what file types you're dealing with.

It also helps you to tell the difference between data files and programs. A lot of viruses have names that make them look like data files if you have the extension hidden.

Great! Thanks. My book did not explain that. I'll add your comments next to the paragraph in question.

You dont have to do. Its only an option to allow you to see what is the file extension for the file. The file extension determines the type of program associated with the file.
