I was wondering what everyone's views are on Websites that are completely created with Flash.

Personally, I don't like 'em.
<rant> I think they suck! </rant>

Sorry...tired.

Highly inaccessible, provide an XHTML alternative if you do.

It depends on what the purpose of the site is. If it's for something like a musician, than they are annoying because a bunch of the content could very easily be done through normal markup. However, if the site is basically about showing Flash movies, then that's where I figure a person can get a way with it. Look at homestarrunner.com. The only real purpose of the site is to show Flash movies, so there's going to be almost no content that would be used via markup. They could do some of it in markup, but if you can't use Flash anyway, then the site is pointless to you regardless if they use markup, or not.

Hi,

designs are moving more towards dynamic sites. It also makes it more interesting if used in the right way.

see: www.designers-4-web.com

and go to our portfolio page and click on the CRS site and HBSX sites and you will see what i mean.

I love completely flash sites. only 3% of the general public don't have a flash player. it does cause problems for people who are blind though(it works fine for peeps who are deaf or parapalegic or quadrapalegic. not many other disabilities that would affect internet browsing. search google for DynaBrowse if you think it DOES cause a problem for them.)

-sidenote: flash hates MACs. can't get a stable flash player for MAC for some reason. weird. /sidenote-

Flash works fine on my MAC.

I have seen good flash sites, but there are more that are porly done than anything. Flash, imho, does hold alot of potential because you can be way more creative with it than just mark-up. Especially now since CSS and xhtml are now the way to go. Relagated web pages to pretty much boring "documents".

For any artist or designer that is really good, there is no better way that I have seen to dispay work than in Flash.

If you do use it, just be sure you know the actionscript and do something really unique and creative with it, imho.

Flash sites can have dynamic content...

The problem comes in multiple areas...

1. Most people who use flash don't understand how to use their libary properly.

2. They dont understand how to properly optimize images.

3. don't care about load times because their 'being an artist', they hide behind the art vs the medium.

LOL That was pretty good.. If you go to "most" art sites, whether Flash or no, they take a little while to load because people want quality images and are willing to sacrifice load time for that. Put "good" stuff up for display to showcase works or none usually. Most of the recent Flash sites load as fast as any coded site with similar quality images.

Hi,

Yes, load time is always an issue with flash sites. Surfers have a low concentration span and if your site cannot load within 5 to 8 Secs then surfers will move on.

Thats why i didn't opt for flash. But with bradband, I may well add a flash intro to my site in the near future.

Checked it out. Liked it better on auto mode though. The site of the designers that made that site is really good though. There link is at the bottom of the page once you getin. They do have an english version of the site.

i know theres an english version. but theres a lot of words in it that aren't english. they are names done in the native language so it makes some of the content confusing.
