I read an article on search rankings for sites hosted in various countries.

For example, I know 1&1 internet have servers in Germany therfore google picks this and punishes google.co.uk rankings. Which makes sense I guess.

Does anyone have any further info or reading I can look at?

Thanks

So, you're trying to say that Google bases its ratings on where the server is located? According to your example, if I am in the US, 1&1 will put my content on a server in Germany and my rankings would change? I have never seen that before. Aside from a few places known for spam, why would it matter?

Hi

Google and other SE definitely pay close attention to where your site is hosted.

If you are targeting a german market, you should optimise your ranking for google.de, and for that having your site hosted in germany will help you a lot.

For intance, I have a French website that I hosted in the States ... I needed an awful lot of time and effort before beeing ranked in google.fr ...

I have another site which is hosted on my company's server in Ireland. I'm ranked much better in google.ie than in GG.com although I'm getting links worldwide and not only in Ireland.

If your site's target is international then host it in the States.

That's a big deal, so watch out.

I tried to search for a good documentation about that issue in English
The only I could find was : http://www.distilled.co.uk/blog/interviews/local-seos-share-geo-location-tips-from-around-the-world/

Good luck !

Sure, if you're targeting that country. I thought it was a general question. He didn't say he was targeting Germany, just that his Web host company put them on servers there.

I wasnt trying to say anything.

More asking whether there it is a strong disadvantage to say ... host a site in germany and get it to rank highly in google.co.uk for example.

Thanks for your help.

It has a massive importance.
So if you want to target the English market, then, host your site in the UK; even if it costs you a bit more.
