Hi all!

I am working for a consultant firm. They have sent me on a new project. When I was sent there, the company needed someone with skills of HTML and CSS. While you are working there, you are ask to do Flash and Graphic Design. Shouldn’t I be getting pay more because I am providing them with more skills then what they bargain for?

It's like they want to hire a Flash Designer, Graphic Designer and someone who can do HTML/CSS. If you do a search to see how much a Flash Designer/Developer and a Graphic Design salary makes and combines with someone who can do HTML/CSS. Put all 3 jobs together and the salary is enormous!! Now you have someone who can wear 3 hats.

Is there anyone who can do all that and be an expert in all 3 jobs? Would you even hire anyone who can do all 3 jobs? I am not talking just about salary wise but the skill side. People are usually an expert in what they do if they stay focus on what they do best. How can you be an expert in all 3 jobs? It's like asking someone who can be an expert Chef, Auto Mechanic and a Brain Surgeon. ha ha ha :D

But anyway, what's fair is fair. I just wanted to know if any of you ever got a job and they start asking you to do more then what you are hire for. Even if you can be a Chef, Auto Mechanic and a Brain Surgeon. Shouldn't you be expecting to get paid more? Doesn't it feel like you have been used or taken advantage when a company does that to you?

If you are in that situation right now and have been there for months or years, what would you do? Do they owe you some serious cash?! Could this be a legal issue?

I like to hear your inputs and thanks!

Wow, I can't believe nobody wants to discuss this issue of running a "Sneaky Business" or "Sleek Business" or "Dishonest Business" practice. Whatever you want to call it, it's all the same. I would have thought most of us are doing multiple skill jobs and not getting paid for it. Just think, if companies can afford to pay you for the 20 skills that you can do, you would be a millionaire!! :D

I had an interview a few months ago. Talk about confuse and mess up! They were looking for someone who can do the following but pay for only 1 skill:

- Web Developer
- Flash Developer
- UI Designer
- Graphic Designer
- Technical Writer
- Web Designer
- Programmer
- Advertising
- Program Engineer
- Network Administration
- Salesman
- e-commerce

Wow!! Is your mind starting to spin around? I almost had a heart attack after I read the list of their requirements. I started cracking up at the interview and got up and left. I wasn't sure if the interview was a joke that they were playing around or they wanted to see if someone is stupid enough to take the bait.

What about companies that ask you to learn new skills and take classes? You ask them are you going to pay for my classes and pay for the time I am taking these long classes. Are you going to give a raise for adding new skills and knowledge? Do I even want to take those classes and become Salesmen when my talent is really a Brain Surgeon?!!!

In order to hire someone who can master in all of those skills, well, that wouldn't be possible because the individual who can hack out all those skills would be going to college until they either at a retire stage of not alive anymore. :D

Can you imagine your business card title? Your business card would have to be the size of a legal pad. ha ha ha

I have met many people who can hack out multiple jobs or skills, and let me tell you, lousy work!! The completed work is half finish on a LUCKY day. That's because instead of focusing on what they can be best at, they spent too many wasted times doing things they don't really know. Costing companies millions!! Companies think they are saving a lot of money by getting a multi jobs individual, but think again.

Also, it sucks when businesses pull that sleekness because there are a lot of talented people who are desparately looking for jobs. There's probably many Flash Designers or a Graphic Designers sitting at home right now and need a job. Sorry, I have taken both of your jobs because I can do everything.

Hmmm, I wonder if that really help out our trouble economy today???

If you want a job that you only have to do one thing and not learn anything new well then you are in the wrong field!

To stay up with all the changes in technology you have to take classes and learn new things and know how to do more then one thing.

No matter what field you get into, employers ALWAYS want to get the most they can out of every employee, and pay as few people as they can to get the work done.

Every job I have ever had started as: "Ok, your job responsibilities are this and this and this." And before long they became: "Ok, now we need you to also do this and this. Oh and while you're at it, do this and this and that other thing.", usually without associating pay.

Welcome to adulthood and the "way things work".

If you're wise, you expand your knowledge and skills so down the road you can make more money, either by taking on more responsibility with that company, or finding a better job elsewhere that pays better and acknowledges, and compensates you for, your extensive skills.
