Hello,

This is my first post here, but most likely not my last. I am trying to get started in amateur web site building since I have some downtime over this summer (i'm still in school). I've gathered some books together and the new books give instructions for building web sites with Expressions Web and Dreamweaver. My question is which programs are better for what purposes? Is one clearly regarded as superior in the web site building arena? For a person in my position which program would be better? Do people usually just download these programs off of the internet for free? I really appreciate the help.

Nate.

Hi Nate,

I doubt you're going to find folks who've used both, and can realistically compare. My guess is that for every Expressions customer, there are 50-100 Dreamweaver customers. Mostly (IMO) this is due to the fact that DW has been out far longer, and during the lifespan of FrontPage (ie, "the dark years"). There was no question that DW was better than FrontPage. But with Expressions (which I use), I'm getting the feeling the products are now quite similar, I've even seen some reviews that favor Expressions over DW. But suffice to say, they're probably both quite similar at this point.

Neither is free software - if you're looking for free there are certainly many options and I'd suggest doing a search for "HTML editors" or the like, on this forum to find plenty of lists (I'd list some but I don't know them!).

Dave

Thanks for the info tracknut,

About the software being free, i've heard that people torrent these programs, but I don't really know the deal with that.

Well, you can check dreamweaver cs4 review (http://www.softwareaddicted.com/2008/06/20/20/dreamweaver-cs4-beta-review/). What tool can you use for example to generate complete web 2.0 web sites?
