load part of an image

I know it is possible to only display part of an image using div's or layers, but is it possible to only load part of an image? I'm running into a problem with a very zoomed image. It is a small file, but its taking a long time to refresh at large resolutions, just because it has to render all the off screen image too. Is there any way to alleviate this?

I doubt it,unless an image is completely preloaded,you can not display it.

it is entirely preloaded, I was not as concerned about that as I was concerned for the render time as you resize it
