Creating Social Sites with Rails

Hello. I am a beginner to creating web applications. I started learning Ruby on Rails to create my social network site. But while studying i have noticed there are many many aspects of social sites like databases, discussions, ajax calls, users, admin panels etc. I dont know can I achieve this task on my own.

Is creating social sites suitable for just professionals or someone with enthusiasm can achieve this?

What exactly you are you looking for in a "social site"?

Social network site. A community site. Users will share files. Users will create groups as in Facebook. Each group have its own file pool and forum etc.

Great. I asked because the term "social network" has become like "Web 2.0". It means different things to different people: a forum, an upload site, an all-encompassing site like you mentioned. That should help others direct you in what you need.
