there are plenty of ways to steal one, why?

:P it's easier to steal them than you think, if you have a URL then most command line download apps should work fine, if that's not an option noscript for firefox will disable javasript and display a funny yellow box in place, right click, choose save target as, easy as pie. I don't advocate stealing them though, only use them if you've got told you can.

The .swf is the finished, compiled Flash project. While helpful for visualization, there is no way to change or interact with it. Now there are Flash decompilers which take apart the .swf and (suggest) how they have been put together. From there you could recreate a similar Flash .fla file, which would allow you to change and interact with the animation.
But please remember, some poor sucker like me may have worked many hours to create what you could steal in a few moments..
