one of my clients wants such a thing on his website. is it better to record it by myself or take ready-made from a specialized company??

One of the most popular ones is sitepal. (http://www.sitepal.com/) It would be a pain to create your own.

However really consider it carefully. The whole concept never took off as some companies may have hoped, for a very good reason, because they annoy the hell out of EVERY single user.

Not necessarily a pain. Ok, so you're PROBABLY not looking for a solution right now, but you may wanna take a look at AlterEgos. It's a stand alone package that lets you create talkng heads (handles pretty much everything, so long as you provide the voice recording and script).

There's a trial version on Alteregos.com. Check it out. :)

sitepal's character is more cartoon feel, check out these website talking character (http://website-talk.a4desk.com) -- which is more realistic feel and you can record your own voice. It would be easier to use such service than recreate all yourself.
