Hi, first of all, is SEO a software? How does it work?
Also, I'd like to know how to promote my website and have it show up on the top of the list on search engines such as Google and Yahoo. One thing I want to know is: When surfers enter the keywords that I've put in my <meta> code, then my website will show up right? How do I make it to the top of the list? Thanks!

"Search Engine Optimization" is not a software, but more of a process that improves indexability by using relevant keywords, semantic tags (creating "<p>" for 'paragraphs', etc.. basically, naming elements by what they are), giving images alt="" descriptive text and other elements title="" descriptive text, and creative use of 'good' coding (I mean 'white hat', -none of this hidden text/text same color as background-color, etc... this is 'black hat'.)
Moving embedded CSS (and inline-style CSS, if possible) to externally referenced files. This gets 'presentational' code away from 'content', making it possible to spider/'bots to dig a little deeper into your pages/s, seeking indexable terms/keywords. I have read that spider/'bots only go 'several hundred words' into a page seeking indexable keywords and, -it they have to wade through a lengthy embedded "<STYLE>~....~</STYLE>" section, you potentially are losing indexing. There is nothing in a CSS section that spider/'bots are interested in, -they only want your content.
There is alot more... a Google of "SEO" will show you many things..
"<meta>" data tags are largely ignored these days... notably, by Google, due to rampant abuse in the past decade. -In the 90s, J'ever SEARCH for something using a specific term, say "Indian Artifacts, arrowheads and clovis points, spears" and you instead landed upon a Britney SPEARS or Spice Girls page? That was the reason why... misuse of META-data tags trying to feign-in stumblers using 'bait'.
And, if you 'cram' more than 50-maybe words in META, Google assume "SPAM" and will blacklist you anyway, and, do not use any single 'word' in excess of 3 or maybe 4 times as this too, constitutes "spamming". So keywords="fun, fun-place, fun time, fun house, house of fun, fun in the sun, fun tunes.... (etc.)" is SPAM-ish because you are 'cramming' the word "fun"... see?
