desperation??? not really....
looks like marketing for "cloud" apps (bet you can trade your coupons for service upgrades in the Live! family of apps) !

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how MS benefits from IE being the most-used browser? It's a free download, so they don't get paid for it. There's no built-in advertising, so they can't get money that way either.

What's their motivation?

Yup, that's how I see it as well, they want people using their product now, they can charge them for it once they hold the monopoly.
That's why they don't care so much about people stealing their software(oh come on, they could screw over 90% of the pirates in under a month if they wanted to), because people steal their software rather than using something else they keep the lead, so other people have to buy it to keep with the majority.

Remember, a good portion of the population still doubleclick buttons and links online, let MSN take over the browser and the internet and people will be convinced that you need microsoft for the internet, which they'll tell people is the truth, and microsoft will have another monopoly to force on people.

The benefit they have has more to do with the .NET runtime for ASP.NET. If you write your code by their books, you'll end up with a very flashy looking UI that works perfectly in IE. The same code though won't look quite as nice in other browsers. They call it their compatibility mode. They can do this simply because most people do in fact use IE.

There are other things to - such as sharepoint integration (which I never got working quite right in firefox), web based outlook (which is actually an instance of what I mentioned earlier).

You have a similar situation when it comes to visio and sql server/odbc. you can create an odbc connection, and use it from visio, to generate table diagrams (for example). you can't do this if you try to use other db's though.
