... and what is the general consensus?
I had been waiting for the 2.0 release as I plan to integrate Mono (http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page) into the curriculum so I can please the powers that be (IT is under the Math Department!) who think that Windows Server is the only viable server option.
I had played with the older 1.2.x releases and it seems to be a reasonable approach to a cross-platform .NET framework. Let's face the facts, Microsoft does produce a lot of good ideas... but within the constraints of the MS Box.
Many .NET applications are really useful and it would be an advantage to any programmer to be able to combine the advantages of LAMPS (or OS X, Solaris, BSD) with the power of some of the .NET apps.
Well, that's my point of view.

I have downloaded, but won't install on test servers until the weekend.

Well...?

ok... just to update

installed mono, xsp and mod_mono on 2 distinct LAMPS testing servers (the school's) without any problems and tested a couple of very basic ASP.NET & ADO.NET apps successfully. didn't try anything with Winforms or GTK#.

installed mono, xsp and mod_mono on xampps with only a few initial config problems and tested the same basic ASP.NET & ADO.NET apps successfully.

tried to install mono, xsp and mod_mono on WAMP without success. i´m sure it can be done, but WAMP is sometimes a little persnickety

conclusion.... it works!
will start having advanced students play with a couple of their tested .NET apps they have written on the LAMPS servers to see if there are any problems when crossing over.
