Hi,

My school gives me a free webhosting, but the only access provided is by Frontpage. I hate Frontpage, so is there anyway to get around this and access it like a normal FTP site?

To my knowledge Front Page didn't use any other protocols than FTP when accessing the web host. Have you tried FTP?

That's what I thought, but the school's instructions don't list a traditional ftp:// address.
All they give me is the URL of the site, a username and password, and the instructions "to begin editing, open the site in Internet Explorer and click File | Edit with Microsoft Office Frontpage".

If they gave you a URL, a username, and a password, have you tried to FTP there, just replacing "http" with "ftp"?

Yep. It just times out.

Don't add the protocol identifier to the URL. Just use the URL without the "http" and see if that works. Other than that, I believe what they want you to use are Frontpage Server Extensions, which may indeed be entirely different than FTP.

Otherwise, try pining the domain name on which your site resides and use the IP address for the domain name as the FTP address.

Thanks for all your great posts toicontien!
But I'm think'n that you meant to say "pinging"
Otherwise, try pining the domain name on
Best wishes,

Ha ha! No. :) I want you to fall in love with the domain name, but never tell it.

You could try searching the Microsoft Developer Network website (http://msdn.microsoft.com/) for information on Frontpage extensions. I did a little searching and didn't find anything, but I'm sure they have more info.

It would depend on how quick Microsoft are to clean up their site. Since they announced the death of FrontPage over a year ago they may have started removing the articles about it from their site to make more space for their articles on Expression Web.
