I am currently working on a project and I need to decide a language to start on. A friend of mine suggested me Ruby on Rails but after some research I did and read some reviews I am not sure if Ruby on Rails is trustworthy. Personally I would have prefered PHP along with Javascript and AJAX to develop a dynamic web site. My friend insists that Ruby on Rails would be much better choice because is a framework. However I am concerned about some negative points I have read about Ruby on Rails such as: it doesn't scale, it cannot manage a lot of users together and data and that twitter.com is abandoning Rails because of some problems it has.

Any opinions or suggestions ????

I say go with what you feel would be easier to use. Everyone will have different opinions, yet PHP is a good choice as it is well documented online and has many, many resources (not to mention programmers).

Most of my personal stuff is PHP and use Prototype.js for JS\AJAX, good framework (jQuery is another great one). Although 3 sites currently writing in PERL (I'm a sicko :D).

If you have experience with PHP\MySQL then it seems like that would be the most viable option. As for Ruby on Rails, well I can't give insight to its benefits as I've never worked in Ruby, hopefully some Ruby users (and RoR users) can help state the case for Ruby.
