Hi Guys,

I was wondering something. Currently I am using a css menu on a website. Eventually the css menu is going to come out and I was thinking of replacing the menu with images...

The thing is that when I try to recreate the menu items in Photoshop they don't look as good as in css (which is why I might just keep the css and take out the fly out effect of the menu).

Why is that? Even when I am saving them as the maximum size file..the font always looks a bit off. I have attached a sample so you can see.

I mean I'm probably better off with the css since jpgs will make the site size bigger but I would want to know why that happens just out of curiousity.

Thanks!!

Allie

You're using a smooth anti-alias for the font. Try changing it. (I don't remember how to do that in PS, or I'd tell you.)

I can change it to crisp, none, strong or sharp but those look even worse.

Sometimes it depends on the font. Not all fonts out there are good for certain sizes, and tend to degrade if the size is smaller or larger than "normal." Same for the type of alias used when applied.

Sometimes I bold the text and apply the smooth anti-alias; that tends to make a good result.

Are you by any chance resizing the jpeg file after you convert the text to an image? That would cause a problem.

No, not resizing at all. Maybe it is the font. I am using Century Gothic....Maybe it's a mix of the bright red color and the fact that I am using white on a font that is already thin to begin with??

I mean I'd rather keep the cs since it looks better anyway but I was just curious....

I just tried it with Century Gothic, 12pt (which seems to be the size of your "sleep" example., on red, with smoothing. With "regular" setting, you';re right the anti-aliasing makes it look pretty bad. But "bold" seems to match your "sleep" font, and still at "smooth". It looks fine to me - essentially the same.
