Dedicated Server Needed?

In thinking of starting/running a Social Networking Site, would I need to have/use a Dedicated Server? If so, why?

No, you wouldn't need a dedicated server neccessarily, but if you expect more than a couple of hundred active users then yeah.

Depending on how efficient the software you choose is, with a couple of thousand active users you would probably need more than one dedicated server.

To start off with, you could probably use a VPS (virtual private server) then later expand.
