Websites with obscene content & links to our site

Hi everyone,

I am after a bit of advice regarding something i had found today.

After doing some research on google using our URL i found some sites near the last couple of pages that had obscene pornographic links ( including ones i dont really want to mention) and also a link to our website, mainly our forums.

I am thinking this may have something to do with a forum i installed on our website ( it was a phpbb3 forum) and we had problems with people creating fake accounts and putting spam posts up to link to some obscene sites, which of course i kept on top of and deleted as soon as i noticed them.

I tried a few different things to try and stop them like the user having to auth through email as they usually used fake email address, unfortunatly this didnt work so for the time being i have had to disable the forums...

Regarding the sites which have the links back to us, is there anything we can do about those sites? I have done a whois on the domain names and a couple of them have come back with an email address for administrive contact..

Any help at all to try sort this problem would be great, we dont really want these sites coming up if possible users google our domain name.

If you're running Apache, you might want to look at blocking their domain or ip address through the .htaccess file. I'm no expert on this, but I think something like below will work:


RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} bogus-site\.com [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [F]
