There are tools to generate sitemap for forums and blogs. A sitemap can help search engines to discover deeper but more valuable pages.

Ah, but is it necessary? Can't we just have SEO links for the forums, how do the big forums (such as this) do it?

Yes I think that works too. My blog does not have any sitemap but I think Google pretty much has indexed all the entries.
