A really basic question about fonts

Hi all,

Seems the more I know, the less I know. Guess that's the way of things.

Can I automatically send a font I'm using on my site with the site, or trigger some auto installation process so that the visitor gets the font installed?

If not, can someone tell me which are the "safe" fonts.
