if windows 7 is any better than windows 2000, it will be their best operating system yet

Microsoft took the download down and its return is unknown. It lasted about two hours, I believe, because MS doesn't know how to handle the web still.

i got excited when i heard that it was available. of course, it was way too late for me to pick it up by then. also, you can only upgrade from vista SP1 and i'm still blissfully running xp.

I happen to know a friend who has a legitimate product key for windows xp corporate edition, the school's admin does not know he has it.

I like Windows 7, it's not bad at all. It's runs like lighting on my laptop, and although it's mainly eye-candy differences, I like it.

I'll bet windows 7 runs faster, they are only asking for a 1Ghz processor and 1GB of memory, that's lower than vista's requirements(although still large).

I'm downloading now, I think I will have to try it on my spare box though, I don't trust windows on my main box, and a beta version must be even worse(but I still want to try it, who knows, maybe if they catch up with a few bad linux distro's it might be worth trying it).

According to Steve Balmer, head of MS, Windows 7 is Windows Vista with some things fixed.

The comments I hear from people who worked at MS during the Vista release is that Windows 7 is what Vista should have been.

I'd agree. Windows 7 beta is excellent, especially compared to the default Vista.

I am currently running Windows 7... its been running great for me... nice and fast... a little glitchy... but that was expected.

On the whole, would any of you venture to say that Windows 7 is an advancement from previous versions of Windows (save vista)? Did Microsoft finally create something that could triumph their success with Windows2000 and XP?

Well I wouldn't go that far yet, not having used it for long, but I cannot see that it's a step backwards. I don't know about the file system though, it seems to be moving towards the Apple sort of idea (a bad thing in my opinion), but hopefully the folders can still be accessed.

What do you mean file system, do you mean the actual FS? Or do you simple mean that they have adopted more *nix file paths and a more structured design(like vista promised :( )?

Both would be a good thing.

I meant the way the Documents, Music etc. folders are presented as "libraries".

Typical Microsoft techniques - change the way things work so that they become MS-specific.

Ummm... at a guess it would be safe to say... Windows 7 *is* pretty "MS-specific" to begin with :)

What I mean is that they many times change the format/layout from version to version. Meaning you need to learn a new vocabulary, that your friend using a previous won't understand.
